What Tent To Choose?

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what tent to choose. I’ve decided to go for Hilleberg, a Swedish high-quality tentmaker, but there are two really good ones and I have to choose one.

Weight, Packed Size, Inner Length and Price are almost identical with these two tents.

Here are the other specifications:

Nallo 2

Inner Width: 130 cm
Inner Height: 100 cm
Abside: 115 cm
(requires pegs)

Hilleberg Nallo 2

Soulo

Inner Width: 105 cm
Inner Height: 95 cm
Abside: 60 cm
(doesn’t require pegs)

Hilleberg Soulo

The major benefit with Nallo 2 is that you get more space, since it’s made for 2 persons. On the downside, it needs pegs in order to stand at all. Soulo on the other hand is free standing, but not as spacious, especially not in the abside. The tunnel design of Nallo 2 makes it more robust to the high winds I will encounter in Patagonia. Both tents come in discrete green and bright red, and I’ll definitely go for the green in order to expose myself less while camping.

    Hi Carl,

Did you consider a Hilleberg Unna tent? I’m undecided between that and the Soula.

BTW, I’m landing in Buenos Aires Dec 4 to begin my South American tour. Perhaps we’ll run into each other along the way.

    Safe riding,

    Ray

    Hi Ray!

I didn’t consider it due to the absence of an abside, which I think is very appreciated in times of steady rain. But I guess both are great tents.

Are you gonna start in BA? I’m flying to Ushuaia the 4th. Do you also have a blog?

    Keep in touch!

    Carl-David

I’ll be flying down to BA on Nov. 16th and riding to Ushuaia. I’ll probably run into both of you at some point on the road. Safe journeys and I’ll see you down there!

Carl!! This is amazing, I am so happy for you! You’re only on your first entry but I’ve aleady learnt so much just reading your blog so far! I know I sound silly to you and all the other experienced campers, but I’ve learnt plenty about tents, and packing and bikes and cycling and South America! And most importantly, I’ve learnt about your motivations and what you want to get out of this trip…=) You couldn’t have summed up my own beliefs better than in your first couple of paragraphs in “The trip”. But all the other reasons you gave are so much more well thought-out than I could have mustered, and more importantly, you ACTED on these motivations and are truly well on your way to starting the adventure of your lifetime! You are living your dream Carl – and I am very happy to be able to partake in a little bit if it, albeit vicariously.=) BIG FAT HUGS for the rest of your preparations and I can’t wait to read more!!!!!!!!!! p.s. gd luck on your thesis too!! love, gerrie!

    Hi Carl,

I’m going to spend a few days in BA then take a bus to San Carlos de Bariloche and begin riding from there. Won’t be blogging but will get a green Unna tent.

Safe journey to everyone and will be checking your blog periodically.

For southamerica and any other hot country with alot of vegitation I would consider a jungel hammock, got one myselves from: http://hennessyhammock.com/

Lightest quickest and most comfortable sleeping gear you can bring. And you doesn’t have to search for even ground nor worry about land buggs.

Hope you get a great trip.

Hi, did you checked this tents against heavy water loading? As i suspect different materials and construction of the tents.

    Hi Denis,

Both tents are light-weight and uses the Kerlon 1200 fabric. I haven’t read any reviews where people comment on their resistance to long and heavy water exposures, so I guess they should be just fine =) Please update me if you find out something about it.
